The Environmental Education Center (KPE) Pertouliou-Trikkeon was founded in 2009 as a structure of the Ministry of Education. It is situated both in the mountain area of Pertouli and in Trikala, a medium sized town in the center of Greece. It is staffed with five teachers of primary and secondary education, namely the Director, the deputy Director and three members of the pedagogical team.
KPE is a Center of environmental education and education for sustainability. Our activity includes the design and implementation of environmental programmes for students (on subjects such as the forest, the water, the renewable energy sources, the climatic change, traditional architecture), seminars for teachers on various environmental issues, workshops and awareness campaigns as well as the creation of supporting learning and teaching material. More specifically, the members of KPE’s pedagogical team are the authors of various worksheets and of four books on environmental issues, namely “The fir forest of Pertouli”, “Renewable energy sources”, “The prehistoric cave of Theopetra” and “Our school garden”. All of them have been certified as pedagogically correct by IEP, which is the national certification body.
KPE has two fully equipped laboratories, one on Renewable Energy Sources and one on Natural Environment, where the practical part of many programmes and seminars takes place. Moreover, KPE is the coordinator of two school networks entitled “Renewable energy sources and ecological footprint” (national) and “School gardens” (regional). In the former, 39 schools from all over the country are participating with 78 teachers and 975 pupils. The latter includes 29 schools from the region of Thessaly with 925 pupils and 58 teachers in total. These schools have the obligation to remain members of the network for three years.
The aim of KPE is to inform and sensitize pupils, students, teachers of our country and, through them, parents and the entire society on environmental issues, so that more and more people are motivated and involved in the sustainable management of the environment towards the maintenance of the ecological balance. This is achieved in cooperation with scientific institutions, governmental and non-governmental bodies, municipalities and schools of our area, as well as nationwide. Some of them are: the University of Thessaly, the Technological Educational Institution of Thessaly, the Municipality of Trikala, the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Thessaly, the Directorate of Secondary Education of Trikala, the Greek Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES).
During the school years 2015-2017, KPE Pertouliou-Trikkeon developed a project within the framework of the Erasmus+ European Programme in Key Action 1: “Learning Mobility of Individuals”, in the Action Type "Adult education staff mobility" entitled "Environmental Education and Sustainable Development". This project was awarded the Good Practice example, which is given to exemplary projects that form examples of good practice and source of inspiration for others.
Furthermore, since September 2017, our organization has been participating as a partner in another Erasmus+ Programme in Key Action 2: “Cooperation for Innovation and the Exchange of Good Practices”, in the field KA201 “Strategic Partnerships for school education”. The title of the project is "Ecological Footprint Training (e-co-foot )" and it has a duration of three years (2017-2020).
In the nine years of its operation, KPE has trained 10,127 students and 2,931 teachers of all grades of education.
